Allergy to deodorant - what to look for

Just about everyone uses deodorant to prevent themselves from smelling like body odor.  What happens is, it is worn under the arms, and when the person sweats it mixes with the deodorant to create a more pleasant odor.  So what happens if you are allergic to the exact substance, the deodorant, that you are trying to use to have you smell better?

The question really is, are you doomed to have body odor just because you have an allergy to deodorant?  The simple answer is no, there are some other things that you can use to help you smell better besides wearing deodorant.  How do you know if you are really allergic to deodorant?

Signs Of An Allergic Reaction To Deodorant

If you’re not sure if you are allergic to deodorant, there are certain signs that you can look out for. For instance, if, after applying the deodorant, you notice a rash of any kind, or a series of red and inflamed bumps, or anything else out of the ordinary, it’s recommended that you stop using the deodorant immediately. However, just because you have a reaction to deodorant doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re allergic to it. It could mean that you’re simply having a bad reaction to that particular brand. Before you stop using deodorant altogether, because you think you’re allergic to it, you should probably try just switching brands. Try several different brands. If, after all that, you still exhibit signs of an allergy to deodorant, that’s when you should give up deodorant altogether.

Alternatives To Deodorant

If you feel that you are, in fact, allergic to deodorant, try using other things under your arms to keep you from smelling like you just got done running a marathon. For example, try putting baby powder, or talc, under your arms. This will keep you smelling fresh and will also keep you from sweating excessively. It may not be as effective as deodorant so you should probably carry some with you in case you have to add some more during the day.

You should see an allergist

If you are still questioning whether or not you could be allergic to deodorant, you need to consult a allergist.  What an allergist will be able to do is to test and see if you are really allergic to deodorant and many other substances.  You just never know, it could very well be a soap allergy that you have rather than a deodorant allergy.  The only way to truly tell if you are allergic to deodorant and not have a soap allergy is by seeing an allergist.

You have to realize that just because you are allergic to deodorant it does not mean that this is the end of the world.  It will mean that you will just have to find other things that will allow you to remain fresh and order free all day long.  This way you’ll be able to still smell good no matter how much you sweat during a day.
